Helping individuals find vitality, connection, vision, and greater meaning for their lives.
About Me
John R. Lucy, Ph.D.
I help individuals clarify a sense of direction in their lives by restoring access to vitality, connection, meaning, and vision. Many people come to therapy feeling caught in patterns that once helped them cope but now limit their ability to feel alive, connected, or purposeful. My work focuses on identifying these self-reinforcing cycles and creating the conditions for change to unfold in a way that feels safe, coherent, and sustainable.
As a licensed psychologist with a background in theological study, I respect the deeply personal ways people make sense of their experiences—psychologically, relationally, and spiritually. Drawing on contemporary psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and relational approaches to therapy, I support clients in gently loosening patterns of overprotection or withdrawal, expanding their capacity for connection, and orienting their energy toward what matters most to them.
Change here is not forced or imposed. It emerges through careful attention to context, relationship, and readiness, allowing insight to become embodied and meaningful within everyday life.
Experience Summary
My educational background includes an undergraduate degree in business administration and graduate study in theology (M.A.) and clinical psychology (Ph.D.). I was licensed to practice as a psychologist in 1995 (GA License 1911) after completing my pre and postdoctoral training working in medical centers providing both outpatient and inpatient care and consultation services as a psychologist in the U.S. Navy. My private practice (Decatur Psychology, LLC) was formed in 2008 after a 13-year career working in higher education directing college counseling centers at Oxford College of Emory University and Agnes Scott College, where I also worked as an associate dean of students. I have taught and supervised both undergraduate and graduate students. I am a member of the Georgia Psychological Association. Link to resume.
